Education / Development & storytelling
Bring the story, people and resources together.
Progression roleThe overview
A producer helps turn an idea into a completed film. They bring together the creative team, financing and practical support, and keep major decisions aligned with the project’s ambitions.
The job starts well before a camera rolls. A producer may develop a script, assemble collaborators and decide what scale of production is achievable. During filming and post-production they keep the wider project moving, delegating detailed operations to colleagues such as the line producer.
A day might combine a script discussion, a funding conversation and reviewing a production decision.
Your route in
Build experience across the production process before taking responsibility for larger projects.
Produce a short with a small cast and one location. Write down the scope, responsibilities and resources before making commitments.
Keep a sample budget, schedule and explanation of how you solved a problem. Make clear what you personally contributed.
Look for runner or assistant opportunities and ask how decisions move from development into production and delivery.
Producing has several routes, including production management, development and independent filmmaking.
Try it yourself
Plan a three-minute short set in a café. List the cast, crew, location, equipment, post-production and delivery costs. Then propose a cheaper version that preserves the story.
Check that you included preparation and post-production, assigned an owner to each task and explained the creative trade-offs.
