Support the details that build the film’s world.
Entry roleThe overview
Art department assistants support the team responsible for the production’s visual environment, helping with office resources, research and practical tasks.
The department needs ideas to become usable information and physical details. Depending on experience, an assistant may help distribute drawings, gather references or assist with small design and making tasks. They work to the department’s direction rather than designing the entire production independently.
Research, office support and assigned practical work can change as preparation and filming develop.
Your route in
Build examples of visual research and practical work, then look for trainee or assistant opportunities.
Include a researched mood board, a simple drawing and a making example. Explain the brief and your contribution to each.
Label sources and explain why an image helps the project. Keep research easy for another person to follow.
Seek support work where you can observe how drawings, budgets and practical preparation connect.
Assistant or trainee work can lead towards specialist art roles and art direction with further skills.
Try it yourself
Design a fictional character’s desk using ten everyday objects. Create a mood board, list the objects and explain what each says about the character.
Check that the choices tell a consistent story, fit the proposed period and distinguish owned items from things needing to be sourced.
