Education / Post-production
Keep the edit supplied, organised and ready.
Progression roleThe overview
Assistant editors support the editor and the cutting-room workflow. Different assistant grades carry different levels of responsibility.
A second assistant works under the first assistant editor’s guidance. Across the team, the purpose is to make the edit’s materials and processes dependable so creative work can continue. Before accepting a job, clarify which grade is meant and which workflow skills the production requires.
Technical and organisational support changes as new material, revisions and delivery needs arrive.
Your route in
Develop cutting-room experience and technical reliability before progressing into assistant responsibilities.
Practise a small workflow from footage import to a clearly labelled export. Document your steps and how to recover a previous version.
Clarify software, formats, supervision and expected tasks. Do not assume an independent-film assistant credit covers a large production’s workflow.
Seek feedback from experienced assistants and demonstrate dependable results before taking on more complex processes.
Trainee → assistant grades → editor is one possible route; assistant editing is also a specialist career.
Try it yourself
Prepare a mock handover for a revised scene. Include the version, changes, outstanding notes and the files the next person needs.
Check that changes are traceable and nobody has to guess which version is current.
