Education / Camera
Keep the image technically ready and in focus.
Progression roleThe overview
The first AC takes a leading technical role in the camera team, preparing and maintaining cameras and managing focus requirements during filming.
They work with the operator and DoP on the intended shot, checking camera readiness and resolving technical issues. Focus work demands anticipation and precision, especially when performers or the camera move. This is an experienced position rather than a beginner title for anyone helping near a camera.
Testing and setup work is followed by rehearsals, focus preparation and technical checks between takes.
Your route in
Build substantial camera department experience, commonly through trainee and second AC work.
Learn how lens choice, distance and movement affect focus. Use suitable supervised practice rather than experimenting on a live production.
Sketch performer and camera positions and identify the points where focus requirements change.
Ask experienced camera colleagues to review your readiness for specific tasks before taking responsibility for a larger shoot.
Experienced first ACs may continue specialising or move into other camera roles; progression is not automatic.
Try it yourself
Draw a performer’s route through a scene and mark three positions. Describe the information a focus puller would need before rehearsing it.
Check that movement, lens choice and available rehearsal are considered. This paper exercise does not replace technical training.
