Education / Lighting & grip
Lead the lighting team behind the image.
Progression roleThe overview
The gaffer heads the lighting department, working with the DoP to create the intended lighting approach and organise the crew and equipment.
They assess locations, plan requirements and oversee lighting setups. The work involves both visual judgement and technical leadership: a solution must achieve the look and be workable for the production. Departmental safety and electrical competence are central responsibilities, not additions to the creative work.
Recces and planning in preparation become setup decisions and coordination during filming.

For a fictional café scene, describe a warm daytime look and a cold evening version. Prepare a visual brief and resource questions for each.
Check that the change serves the story, can be explained to the team and identifies technical decisions requiring competent planning.
This is an introduction to UK film and scripted TV, rather than a complete job specification. Grades and responsibilities vary by production.
