Lighting Technician / Spark

Turn the lighting plan into a working setup.

Progression role

The overview

What does the role do?

Lighting technicians prepare and operate lighting equipment, working within the gaffer’s plan and the lighting team’s structure.

The job combines practical lighting with electrical competence. Technicians need to understand the equipment, its safe use and the work they are authorised to undertake. They respond to changing setups and help the team achieve the intended look without losing sight of safe working methods.

What might a working day look like?

Setup, adjustments between shots and de-rigging are coordinated with the lighting team.

Typical responsibilities

  • Prepare and operate lighting equipment within competence.
  • Follow the department’s instructions and safe working methods.
  • Support setup changes and communicate equipment issues.

Your route in

Getting started

Develop electrical and lighting training alongside supervised departmental experience.

  1. Identify training gaps

List the tasks you are qualified and experienced to do. Ask a training provider or department professional what you need for the work you want.

  2. Learn the workflow

Use supervised experience to understand setup, testing, adjustment and wrap procedures.

  3. Keep evidence of experience

Maintain accurate records of relevant training and supervised work, without implying that a course alone makes you ready for every task.

Where could it lead?

Further experience may lead towards department coordination or gaffer work.

Do not undertake wiring, testing or rigging outside your competence and authorisation.

Try it yourself

A small step into the role.

Create a paper lighting-change plan for two camera angles. List what stays in place, what changes and who needs to be consulted.

Check your work

Check that you allow for safe access and the department’s approval process; do not use the plan as instructions for live electrical work.
