Help cast move smoothly from base to set.
Entry roleThe overview
Base runners support the second AD at unit base, helping cast move through arrival, costume and hair and make-up to be ready for filming.
They keep track of where people are and pass on changes to the relevant team. A performer arriving at base is not necessarily ready for set: transport and preparation have to line up. At wrap, base runners may help with de-rig and departure arrangements under the AD team’s direction.
Much of the day is spent checking readiness and escorting people between base departments and set.
Your route in
Start with runner experience and learn how cast preparation connects to the shooting day.
Identify arrival, preparation and on-set times. Make a list of details you would confirm rather than assume.
Practise asking for a readiness update without pressuring a department or sharing somebody’s personal information.
Show experience caring for people, coordinating appointments or handling confidential information. Be honest about your level of set experience.
Base running can lead towards additional AD support and second AD work with experience.
Try it yourself
Two cast members need to be on set at different times. Make a sample preparation timetable and identify what happens if one arrival is delayed.
Check that preparation and transport are allowed for, and that changes are communicated through the second AD.
