Education / Assistant directors
Help the set stay informed and ready.
Entry roleThe overview
Floor runners support the AD department on set, helping instructions and people move to the right place at the right time.
The role is about paying attention to the changing needs of filming and carrying out assigned tasks clearly. Floor runners work within the AD team, often under the third AD or key runner. Good support means checking the instruction, staying reachable and reporting when a task is complete or delayed.
A day may include passing on information and helping the AD team coordinate activity around the set.
Your route in
Look for floor runner or trainee work and demonstrate dependable teamwork rather than claiming senior responsibilities.
Give a clear example of staying calm while handling several requests in hospitality, events or another busy workplace.
Write a radio update that says who you are, the task status and what is needed. Leave out unnecessary commentary.
Before your first shift, confirm your supervisor, arrival arrangements and what you should bring. Ask when an instruction is unclear.
Floor running can develop into supporting AD grades; progression depends on experience and readiness.
Try it yourself
Two departments ask for help at once. Write an update to your supervisor that checks priority without promising both tasks immediately.
Check that you state the conflict, ask for a decision and confirm the agreed task and next update.
