Education / Assistant directors
Get tomorrow ready while today is still filming.
Progression roleThe overview
The second AD coordinates off-set preparation and produces the next day’s call sheet, keeping cast and practical arrangements aligned with filming.
The role links the first AD’s shooting plan with the people who need to make it happen. Cast preparation, transport, fittings and facilities must fit together. A call sheet is the result of that coordination, not just a form filled in without checking its information.
A day may combine readiness updates for today with collecting and confirming details for tomorrow.
Your route in
Gain experience in base and AD work before taking on the coordination responsibility of a second AD.
Work backwards from a fictional on-set time to preparation, arrival and transport. Identify who confirms each part.
Make a sample call sheet with imaginary details. Highlight every item you have assumed instead of verified.
Learn how the first and second AD communicate changes, and seek feedback on your readiness updates and organisation.
Base or floor AD experience can develop into second AD work; first AD is a different responsibility, not an automatic promotion.
Try it yourself
Prepare a sample call sheet for two scenes and three cast members. Add a checklist of the people who must confirm the details.
Check location, contact and timing consistency. Explain how you would distribute a revision and prevent use of an old version.
