Education / Production management
Balance the ambition with the available resources.
Progression roleThe overview
The line producer oversees how the production’s money and resources are used to deliver the agreed film or programme.
Working with the producer and department heads, they translate the project into a workable budget and production plan. Decisions about crew, equipment and schedule have creative as well as financial consequences. They need to understand the film’s priorities while managing the practical constraints of making it.
Budget discussions, staffing decisions and reviewing changes to the production plan are central to the role.
Your route in
This is a senior role built on substantial production and financial planning experience.
Use a sample budget to separate preparation, filming and post-production. Explain the assumptions behind each estimate.
Develop experience handling real schedules, resources and approval processes before attempting to lead them.
Compare two ways of shooting the same scene and describe how each affects time, cost and the intended result.
Experienced production managers may move into line producing; exact routes vary by career and production.
Try it yourself
Reduce a fictional short-film budget by ten per cent. Propose three changes and explain the story or operational impact of each.
Check that the savings are plausible, do not simply remove necessary crew or safe working time and preserve the film’s main priorities.
