Education / Production management
Keep the production office organised and informed.
Entry roleThe overview
Production runners support the office team with paperwork, communication and everyday administration. They are different from floor runners, whose work centres on the set.
The office keeps information moving between crew and management. A runner may copy or distribute documents, answer calls, enter information and complete errands. Accuracy matters because outdated information can reach many people quickly; knowing when to check an instruction is part of doing the job well.
Expect a mixture of document preparation, office support and responding to changing requests.
Your route in
Administrative, customer-service and organisation experience can help demonstrate readiness for a runner position.
Use short examples of handling requests, accurate records and deadlines. State availability clearly and keep contact details easy to find.
Practise naming files by date and version, checking recipients and marking sample documents so they cannot be mistaken for live paperwork.
Look for production office runner or assistant vacancies. Explain why office work interests you rather than presenting it as only a route to another job.
Office runner → production secretary or assistant coordinator → production coordinator is one possible route.
Try it yourself
Create a fictional crew list and an email distributing a revised schedule. Include a version number, a clear description of what changed and who needs to act.
Check the attachment matches the email, the recipients are appropriate and no real personal data appears in your practice file.
This is an introduction to UK film and scripted TV, rather than a complete job specification. Grades and responsibilities vary by production.
