Progression roleThe overview
The production coordinator supports the production manager and organises the office systems that help the production function.
They keep crew and management connected, maintain documentation and arrange practical resources such as travel and accommodation. The work involves tracking many dependencies: a changed plan may affect bookings, documents and several departments. Clear records help the team understand what is confirmed and what remains outstanding.
A day may involve updating documents, coordinating a booking and resolving a query from another department.
Your route in
Gain production office experience before taking responsibility for coordination and its wider dependencies.
Practise tracking requests with an owner, deadline, status and confirmation. A beautiful spreadsheet is only useful if the information is current.
Write out what must be confirmed before arranging travel, including approval, dates and the people affected.
Seek office runner, secretary or assistant coordinator work and learn how the coordinator keeps departments informed.
Production coordination can lead towards production management with broader budget and personnel responsibility.
Try it yourself
A fictional cast member’s arrival changes by two hours. Create an action list identifying the bookings, people and documents affected.
Check that you distinguish proposed changes from confirmed ones and include who approves each additional cost.
