Education / Production sound
Record clear sound at the source.
Progression roleThe overview
The production sound mixer leads the sound team and is responsible for the sound recorded during filming, especially dialogue.
In preparation they plan the recording approach and equipment. On set they work with the sound crew and other departments to capture usable recordings. Choices about microphones, noise and recording need to fit the scene while providing clear material for post-production.
Planning the recording approach, checking results and communicating sound issues continue across setups.
Your route in
Develop technical recording experience and production sound teamwork before leading the department.
Practise with equipment appropriate to your experience. Compare recordings and learn to describe issues precisely rather than only calling them bad.
Use sample reports to explain how recordings and notes help the edit and sound post team.
Gain supervised sound experience and seek feedback on both technical results and communication with other departments.
Assistant sound experience can support a route into mixing; independent work varies in scale and responsibility.
Try it yourself
Plan sound for a fictional conversation beside a busy road. List the recording challenges, questions for the director and possible discussions with locations.
Check that you consider the story, the environment and the handover to post, rather than assuming any problem can simply be fixed later.
