Education / Production sound
Help the sound team capture the scene.
Entry roleThe overview
Sound trainees support the production sound department, learning on set and helping with straightforward tasks under supervision.
They may assist equipment preparation, battery arrangements and general departmental errands. The role gives an introduction to how sound work fits around the camera and performers. What a trainee is asked to do depends on experience; they should follow a sound team member’s direction rather than assume responsibility for recording.
Preparation, responding to the department’s requests and learning during setups form part of the day.
Your route in
Learn basic recording vocabulary and seek supervised sound trainee opportunities.
Record ordinary room sounds on your own device. Compare a quiet space with a noisy one and describe what masks speech.
Create a fictional sound report and check the relationship between scene, take and file names.
Show curiosity and reliable teamwork. Explain what equipment you have used and distinguish practice from professional experience.
Trainee work can develop into assistant sound responsibilities with further experience.
Try it yourself
Listen to a short dialogue scene and list sounds that might make recording difficult. Create questions for the sound team before filming.
Check that you distinguish problems recorded in the scene from sounds added later, and avoid proposing changes without consulting the team.
This is an introduction to UK film and scripted TV, rather than a complete job specification. Grades and responsibilities vary by production.
